Optimization and personalization of micronutrient therapy in critical illness

The European BIO-MICRO consortium aims to refine the assessment of micronutrient status and metabolic demands in critically ill patients. With new analytical tools, we strive to personalise micronutrient therapy across all stages of disease and recovery.

About

BIO‑MICRO (Biomarkers and Intervention Outcomes in Micronutrient Optimization) is an EU‑funded Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Doctoral Network under Horizon Europe.

The network brings together leading experts in intensive care medicine, nutrition, analytical chemistry, metabolism and data science to address a central challenge in critical care: how to reliably detect and treat micronutrient deficiencies in critically ill patients.

Current clinical practice relies on plasma measurements and fixed high‑dose supplementation, even though inflammation distorts plasma levels and individual needs differ substantially. BIO‑MICRO will develop and validate innovative cellular and functional biomarkers of micronutrient status, apply these in a multicentre clinical cohort, and explore how tailored micronutrient strategies can improve outcomes during ICU stay and recovery.

Through 13 interconnected PhD projects, BIO‑MICRO offers an international, interdisciplinary training‑through‑research programme. Fellows will work across academic hospitals, research institutes, patient organisations and industry, gaining the skills to translate micro‑scale biomarker data into macro‑level benefits for patients, health systems and society.
